The partnership is a strategic collaboration aimed at reducing food waste and supporting sustainable agriculture in the UAE. Abu Dhabi : Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), Spinneys, and Circa Biotech have joined forces to reduce food waste and promote sustainable farming by turning surplus food into animal feed using black soldier fly larvae. In an experiment that lasted six months at a few outlets in Abu Dhabi, Spinneys was able to reduce the amount of food waste that was disposed of in landfills by 54 percent. Instead, the food waste stream was sent to Circa Biotech, where organic waste was processed to create sustainable biofuel, organic fertilizers, and animal feed that was high in protein and highly nutritious. Through the cooperation, food waste will now be diverted from all Spinneys stores in Abu Dhabi to the agricultural feed production facility at Circa Biotech. This will solve the problem of food waste and open up new possibilities for sustainable resource management in the agricultural sector of the United Arab Emirates. Black soldier fly larvae are used to create valuable agricultural feed, which helps reduce the UAE’s environmental impact and promotes the growth of a circular economy. This supports the UAE’s sustainability initiatives.
